Ziwa: Protecting Uganda’s Endangered Rhinos
The Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is located in the Nakasongola district of central Uganda and was established in 2005. It is a conservation area dedicated to protecting and breeding the highly endangered white rhinoceros. Today, the ranch is home to a thriving population of rhinos, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
History of the Ziwa
In the 1970s and 80s, Uganda’s white rhino population was decimated by poaching and habitat loss. This left the country without any wild rhinos by the mid-1980s. In response, the Ugandan government and several conservation organizations launched an effort to reintroduce rhinos to the country. In 2005, a group of six southern white rhinos were brought to Ziwa. This marked the return of the species to Uganda after almost 30 years!
Today, the ranch is home to over 30 rhinos, including several new births. It has become a crucial center for rhino conservation efforts in Uganda and is recognized as one of the most successful breeding programs in Africa.
Conservation Efforts
The primary goal of Ziwa is to protect the white rhinoceros from extinction. Our team of rangers and staff work tirelessly to protect the rhinos from poaching and to ensure their habitat is preserved.
In addition to protecting the rhinos, Ziwa is also dedicated to educating the public about rhino conservation and the importance of preserving biodiversity. Visitors to Ziwa can take guided tours to learn about the rhinos and their habitat. During their visit, they will also learn about the conservation efforts underway.
The Ziwa team also work with local communities to promote sustainable development and reduce human-wildlife conflict. Through these efforts, Ziwa is helping to create a more harmonious relationship between humans and the natural world.
