Baby Rhinos Born at Ziwa
It is with immense pleasure that we at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch announce the births of two male calves. They were both born within 24 hours of each other here on the ranch.
Malaika gave birth to her fourth calf on April 12th, 2023. Meanwhile, her sister Uhuru gave birth to her third calf on April 13th, 2023.

The sisters were produced by Nandi, the female rhino that was brought into the country as a donation from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, USA in 2006. She arrived in Uganda at the age of 7 with Hassan who was 5 years old. These two were the first rhinos of six to be reintroduced into Uganda after extinction.
Malaika’s offspring are: Noelle, Elias, Pipo and the newborn, while Uhuru’s are: Nakitoma and Rae-Ruparelia. This news brings us great hope as we see the rhino population growing. The idea of relocating some of the rhinos back into the wild is becoming an extremely tangible and eminent move. The rhinos would be relocated towards the West Nile region of Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
It is exciting because it means that we are collectively doing something right with our custodian partner UWA and giving this highly endangered species a chance to continue growing in numbers.
