Shoebill Trek

Shoebill Trek & Canoe Ride

The shoebill stork is one of the most sought-after birds to be seen in Uganda. And Ziwa is one of the only places that you are almost always guaranteed to see them. Our record number of sightings was 11 shoebills in one trip! We are very fortunate to have these fantastic prehistoric-looking birds nesting within our swamps here at Ziwa. And of course, our rangers know exactly where to go to get the best chance of seeing them.

This adventure is one for the early birds. You’ll set off on the shoebill trek at 6am. The canoe ride through the swamp at this time gives you the best opportunity to see the shoebill. But not only that, it is a fantastic way to see the beautiful Ugandan sunrise over the Lugogo Swamp.

Water birds are plentiful here, so this is a must for anyone who loves nature or is interested in birding. As this activity starts so early in the morning, you must stay overnight at Ziwa. This is because the gates to the ranch do not open until 07:30.

Canoe through the swamps

You will be briefed by our well-trained rangers before embarking on this adventure through the swamps. Floating peacefully through the swamps whilst the sun rises is an experience like no other. And it’s the perfect way to see the shoebill stork (and other wetland birds) in their natural habitat.
