Safari adventures at Ziwa

Our White Rhinos
Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is proudly the home of the first white rhino breeding programme in Uganda. Located in Nakasongola district, not only can you find rhinos, but a wide variety of bird species and other wildlife. The wildlife ranch has become a popular destination for tourists looking for adventure. We offer Rhino trekking, birding tours, nature hikes, night-time nature walks and a shoebill trek & canoe ride.
The ranch offers a bar and restaurant where we serve cold drinks and delicious home cooked meals. And if you’re looking to stay overnight, you can choose between our campsite or one of our guest houses.
What our Customers Say…
Ziwa is not far from the main highway and an easy stopover on the way North or South. You enter through a main gate, they give you a lovely drink of hibiscus juice as you register your information, and then you drive a few kilometres down a dirt road (with a lot of speed bumps for understandable reasons) to the ranch.
The rooms were very comfortable, beautiful and well proportioned. There was a small fridge in the room which was so great especially with being indoors in the heat. Each room had its own very beautiful bathroom and balcony with comfortable outdoor seating. There was an outdoor pool nearby with attendants on standby that guests could enjoy.
My only issue with Ziwa is that it feels a bit restrictive if you are staying for more than one night. We stayed for two nights which meant that during the day we were unable to do much, as the animals were all hiding from the heat and there was not much to do. As a very active person it felt like a waste of time to sit around doing nothing all day, and we were not allowed to go out for a walk alone because of the animals.
There were extra things that you could book to do, such as bird-watching or a shoebill trip in the late afternoon however these came at a significant extra cost and were probably not worth the money although we did not do them (partly because of the weather). We did do the night walk which was quite fun. This walk lasted 2 hours and was done in the dark with a guide who talked to us about the animals in the park. The rhino walk in the morning was great and a unique experience, getting to see the rhinos up close in their natural habitat while they ate before the day became too warm. It is so much better than seeing them in a zoo habitat and I don’t think I will ever see anything like that again!
The food was really excellent, meals were served buffet style with a good variety and quantity of delicious treats and drinks to try, though the cocktails were excessively expensive and the price was not told to us until afterwards. Staff were very helpful and great at their job.
Overall an amazing experience and it was nice to be able to support their efforts to preserve rhinos and their natural habitats, as these animals have been struggling for some time. With the hard work done by people like those at Ziwa, hopefully we can improve Uganda’s environment for the better!
On the campsite 2 rhinos visited us (on tje other side of the fence fortunately) also warthogs and antilops. They lit a nice campfire for us.
The ranger was a nice and friendly guy and he explained a lot about the Rhino!
We were super close to them!
All the staff from the Sanctuary were very friendly and full of joy
We're expats in Kampala with young kids. Perfect weekend trip spot for the family. Camping options are great.
We had a lunch stopover here but the food was great. The Rhinos were indeed there and even this time the guests were so happy to spot them.
The rooms of this place are also good. Do not have any issues with Ziwa surely. If you are thinking to go there, I surely encourage you.
The food was exquisite, with delicious flavors and beautifully prepared dishes.
And what can we say about the incredible experience of seeing rhinos roaming freely in their natural habitat? Our guide was exceptional. His knowledge, explanations, and passion for these amazing animals made the experience even more meaningful and enriching. We didn’t just have a fantastic time, it exceeded all of our expectations.
We would also like to express our sincere gratitude for the beautiful and important work you do at the sanctuary.
Thank you for making this such a special experience and for giving us memories that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.
New Additions To The Ranch
Ziwa has added some exciting new wildlife additions to the ranch! We’ve recently welcomed the Rothschild Giraffe, Jackson’s Hartebeest, and Plains Zebra. These amazing animals reflect our ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation, and we can’t wait for you to see them.

World Ranger Day! Today we recognise, appreciate and honour the rangers who, have and continue too, dedicate their livelihoods to conserving wildlife for future generations.
Their hard work and commitment is the reason we are able to save our endangered species and for that we cannot thank them enough.
Thank you to all the rangers out there doing this work tirelessly.

Another new beginning in Ziwa! This time a sweet baby girl! We caught mother and calf in some intimate moments this afternoon.
As she is pictured she is just one day old! Did you know zebra foals can stand in as quick as 10mins after birth?

61st Rhino in Uganda! Our dear Donna has given birth to her 5th calf just 3 days ago. A healthy baby girl.
The births are rolling in thick and fast at Ziwa and we still have Uhuru who we can expect to deliver in the coming months.

Ziwa has another baby! This time it is our dear Laloyo who has given birth to her 4th calf to make our population now 52!
Remember we have translocated 4 to Ajai Wildlife Reserve & 4 to Kidepo Valley NP as well as introducing 8 from South Africa, meaning our rhino population has touched the big milestone of 60!
That’s 46 rhinos born in Ziwa between 2009 and 2026 for an average well over 2.5 calves/year! We are so proud of the success of this reintroduction program and the continued national repopulation program.

Spice in Ziwa!! 🦏🇺🇬 @spiceofficial
Today Ziwa had the honour of welcoming The Queen of Dancehall, the one and only Spice! She came today with the mission of laying eyes on the very rhino she has dedicated her lifetime support too and therefore has named: “Spice Nankula Nile”.
Spice is now a part of Ziwa history and the family of Ziwa, we are excited to share Spice Nankula Nile’s growth, friendships and experiences with her over her lifetime.
Spice is rhino conservation!

Wildlife Ranch
Aside from white rhinos, we are lucky enough to have a plethora of wildlife at Ziwa, including over 300 species of birds.

Looking for adventure?
Why not take a look at the activities that we offer at Ziwa?
Our feathered Friends
Our wildlife ranch features woodlands, swamps, and savannahs, attracting a diverse range of bird species. We offer four unique bird trails on the ranch, so why not extend your stay for a couple of days to fully enjoy your visit? Our birding tours are perfect for birders, aspiring ornithologists, and photographers.

Our Growing Rhino Population
The Rhino Re-introduction Project was a joint project between Rhino Fund Uganda and the Roy family. Six southern white rhinos were introduced to Ziwa back in 2006. But, since then we have had many successful births, bringing our number to 42.
Ziwa is conveniently located 176km (109 miles) from Kampala on the Gulu Highway heading north towards Murchison Falls National Park. If you’re driving north, you should turn left at the Nakitoma Trading centre. We are a few kilometres away.
At One With Nature
Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch offers peace and tranquillity in beautiful surroundings where you can be at one with nature. Whether you’re photographing rhinos or any of the exotic wild birds that can be found here, we’re sure you’ll find your connection to nature.
And if you’re staying in our campsite or one of our guest houses, there’s plenty of nocturnal wildlife activity too. Our infra-red night cameras frequently pick up porcupines, aardvarks and other animals going about their business.
